The Neotropical Orphninae genus Aegidiellus Paulian is revised. Two new species are described: Aegidiellus zezaoi sp. nov. and Aegidiellus dentipenis sp. nov. The genus occurs in eastern Brazil, mostly in the Atlantic Forest ecoregion. Key to species, descriptions, illustrations of habitus and male genitalia, and distribution maps are given.

A new species of Aegidium Arrow from the Atlantic forest ecoregion

Frolov, A.V., Grossi, P.C., Vaz-De-Mello, F.Z. 2015. A new species of the genus Aegidium (Coleoptera, Scarabaeidae) from the Atlantic Forest ecoregion in South America. Zootaxa, 4007 (3), 437–439.

The New World genus Aegidium Arrow comprises mid-sized to rather large beetles belonging to 12 species. The genus is distributed up to southern Mexico in the north (Morón 1991) and A. cribratum chileanum Paulian was described from Chile, but Aegidium has not been recorded southeast of the Amazonia. An interesting discovery was made by one of us (P.C.G.) who collected one male Aegidium specimen in the Atlantic forest patch near Nova Friburgo (Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil) — the area separated from the yet known range of the genus by vast territories occupied by the Cerrado biome. Examination of this specimen showed that it belongs to an undescribed species and differs sharply from the other congeners in the shape of its aedeagus.

Genus Paraegidium (Scarabaeidae, Orphninae)

Orphninae, Paraegidium costalimai

Body about 8 mm long, brown to dark-brown. Mandibles subsymmetrical. Clypeus with protruding horn-like anterior angles in males, somewhat rectangular, with slightly upturned anterior margin in females. Pronotum excavated medially, with 2 ridges aside the excavation in males, slightly depressed medially in females. Propleurae with carinae separating anterolateral areas from basal area. Scutellum narrowly rounded apically, about 1/10 length of elytra. Elytra convex, with marked humeral umbones, without distinct striae or carinae, densely punctate with U-shaped punctures. Wings fully developed. Metepisternon triangular, its posterior angle somewhat triangular and is situated in the distinct concavity of epipleuron...

Orphninae, Aegidiellus alatusBody mid-sized (length about 10 mm), brown to dark-brown. Mandibles subsymmetrical. Clypeus without tubercles, horns or ridges. Pronotum with deep excavation in the middle, two horns bordering the excavation near anterior margin, and with a tubercle medially on the anterior margin in most males; females with pronotum impressed anteriorly on disc and with a tubercle medially on the anterior margin.
